Department of Radiation Oncology
Prof. Dr. habil. Dr. med. Michael Flentje
Heal, palliate, research, educate
In this way one could summarize the four pillars of the department of radiation oncology.
Heal: To be diagnosed with cancer is frightening and worrying news for every patient. Many tumors, however, can be controlled with modern treatment techniques. Thereby, everything centers around the patient: the optimal treatment strategy is individually coordinated between physicians of different oncological specialization. In our department intensive and personal care is taken of every single patient. Application of state-of-the-art and targeted techniques allows for an optimal treatment with respect to chances of healing and minimization of side effects.
Palliate: Healing can not be achieved for every patient. Nevertheless, we as radiation oncologists can make valuable contributions to palliate symptoms and to improve or preserve quality of life.
Research: We want to get better! Through intensive research we try to push radiation therapy forward.
Educate: Future doctors should receive practical and concrete insights into the broad spectrum of cancer therapy in our profession. We offer internships, clinical traineeships, a practical year or graduations to all interested students.
The department of radiation oncology is part of the oncological center of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Mainfranken (http://ccc.uk-wuerzburg.de/).
